Vaughan Street jail, circa 1881, is the oldest public building in Winnipeg. It was originally a makeshift jailhouse and a setting for hangings, and is believed to be haunted by the ghosts of some of the hanged men, who have been known to show up as floating apparitions.

I was an inmate there when me and another man lay awake talking while the others were sleeping, when we heard the sound of shuffling footsteps pass in front of our cell although we both could not see anything the footsteps continued down the corridor until the end where the sound of table we played cards on was heard by the both us being lifted up and dropped to the floor. (But no woke up)only the two of us heard it.
