Many ghosts are said to reside here, including one in the farm on Spear Street and another, a female in period dress, whose apparition has been seen in the Agriculture Department’s Bittersweet House. In the Center for Counseling and Testing, the ghost of retired seaman Captain Jacobs has been seen along with some poltergeist activity, and at the Center for Cultural Pluralism’s Allen House, a ghost is said to live on the top floor and emit a cold feeling. Converse Hall is believed to be haunted by a former student who committed suicide by electrocution and likes to tinker with electrical appliances; Coolidge Hall has a male apparition who wakes up students by staring at them. At Grasse Mount House witnesses have heard unexplained voices and doors on that lock or slam on the second floor. And at Living and Learning Center’s Section C, strange noises are said to come from under the staircases leading to Section B. Millis Hall is supposed to have had a female ghost in residence on the 2nd floor in 1997-1998, and another dorm, Redstone Hall, has an apparition who shows up on the back stairway and runs through walls. And lastly, some say at Simpson Hall roams the spirit of a man who once stalked a student.

I live in Simpson Hall at UVM and my hallmates and I have had several encounters with its ghost (who we’ve named Calvin). A couple of nights ago, my roommate woke up and felt that someone was watching her and saw an eerie light in the corner of the room and heard a hissing noise and her brain just went “that’s just our ghost” and she went back to sleep. We’ve also been hearing knocking at the door when no one was there. The door has also slammed shut on its own. A girl who lives three doors down from me was on her way to the bathroom the other morning and someone whispered “I see you” in her ear and there was no one there. The other night, another girl who lives on our hall ran into our room and sat in my desk chair and said “it’s just so cold” then got up and ran back to her room without any other explanation. A couple of us have experienced a sensation of feeling followed when walking down the hallway of our building, only to turn around and find no one there. My roommate and I have both been sitting in our room and gotten the chills at the same time, and when we told Calvin to leave, they stopped. TODAY my roommate was sitting at her desk and it felt like someone was putting their arms around her while she was alone in our room, and she heard static as if she was wearing headphones and then a male voice whispered “I seeee youuu” in her ear. Also, in the middle of the night last night, the handle broke off of our neighbor’s mug and ended up in her roommate’s shoe on the other side of the room. Because the most has happened to our neighbor and my roommate and the both have blond hair, we assume that Calvin has a type he likes to haunt.
