This restaurant is said to be huanted by Dr. Xavier Deschamps, a dentist who was known to use hypnotism as an anesthetic and conduct seances for fun. It is said that he believed the spirits of the dead would lead him to lost treasures. So the story goes, the dentist found a patient he thought was clairvoyant and frequently hypnotized her in the hope of finding secret information, but became frustrated with her and beat her. This happened again and again until she died of a chloroform overdose. The dentist was tried and executed. Apparitions of both Dr. Deschamps and his victim have been seen within the building, and poltergeist activity also has been reported. The victim’s ghost also has been known to speak to the employees, calling them by name. A mysterious black cat also has been seen in the establishment for more than 4 decades.

HVing lunch alone outside in the cloistered alleyway as a storm rolled through. Kept seeing someone on the staircase to my left. Sometimes stationary sometimes walking up or down the stairs.
A new book by Christoper Pena, chronicling Dr. Deschamps trial and execution, was recently published. It’s based on factual information retrieved from the Louisiana archives and is pretty interesting. It’s called The Strange Case of Dr. Etienne Deschamps – Murder in the New Orleans French Quarter.
