The name of Spook Rock Road comes from the large rock formation thought to have been created by Lenape Tribes and rumored to have been used as a sacrificial stone. One legend tells of a Dutch woman and her Indian lover who met here and were murdered by other Dutch settlers in a hate-crime. Their shadows are said to be seen in the moonlight and their screams heard in the woods. Another tale is of an Indian who kidnapped and murdered the teen daughter of a Dutch settler whom he thought had wronged him. Her ghost is said to roam the area.

Close to the end of Spook Rock Rd where it’s coming towards Route 202, there is a slight hill going downward. At that spot, it is known as gravity hill. If you get the right spot on the hill and put your car in neutral, the car will go backwards up the hill by itself. I have witnessed this myself. This is known to a lot of people.
Yes…years ago I had a car full of five guys and we put the car in neutral at that hill past the BIG rock on the right on Spook Rock road. The car rolled backwards up the hill about 15-20 feet and scared the hell out of us…very strange.
A saw in the news the report of similar phenomenon and they said that there was no explanation for that. It has nothing to do with the spiritual world though.
I have done this many times. Strangely, it seems not to work in the rain.
I grew up in Suffern and did this a few times in my family’s big old brown Chevy station wagon!!!
A lot of fun… 🙂
And I agree with @cesar : Not a spiritual phenomena at all, but sort of a gravitational anomaly.
