Originally built in 1911 as the Escambia County Building, including the jail and place of execution, this center is said to be haunted by some of the lawbreakers who met their ends here. Apparitions and shadowy figures have been seen, one of whom is said to be Hosea Poole, the last man executed here. He was convicted of killing his brother and was hanged on July 31, 1920. A ghostly little young girl also has been seen and heard giggling; she skips in the hallways, peers over people’s shoulders, or hides in corners.
