Pendleton Underground is an area of tunnels in the downtown redlight district where many businesses operated in the early 1900s. Although most of the tunnels have been filled in, some remain and are open to the public for tours. One place visited on the tours is said to be haunted, a living quarters for Chinese immigrants; the ghost is said to hang out in the room’s far left corner.

  1. I visited the underground last summer with my cousin who lives in Hermiston. To say the least it was very interesting. I had two experiences down there. The first came after taking a quick picture of the meat freezer. When I looked at the picture later, there is a bizarre white “string” hanging from the ceiling close to me; yet there was nothing hanging there when I took the picture. The second experience I had was a scratch down the back of my right arm. I had not leaned against anything during the visit, but I remember my arm began to sting when we were below and when we came up, I had a three inch scratch on my upper arm.
