Fort Chaffee

This historic site, now an Army National Guard station and training center, is reported to be haunted. The site, which experienced major fires in 2008, has also been used in several films, including A Soldier’s Story in 1984, Biloxi Blues in 1988, and The Tuskegee Airmen in 1995. Elvis Presley also stopped here on the way to his basic training. The apparitions and other strange phenomena experienced here prompted its appearance on the TV show Ghost Adventures.

Bremo Plantation

One house here is said to be haunted by Anne Blaws Barraud Cocke, wife of John Hartwell Cocke, War of 1812 brigadier general and the builder of the plantation estate.

Jefferson Davis Hospital - Elder Street Artists Lofts

Elder Street Artists Lofts, formerly the Jefferson Davis Hospital, is said to be haunted by deceased hospital patients. The activity here is said to stem from the fact that the site was built over an 1800s cemetery where about 3,000 Civil War and yellow fever victims were buried. Before the site was turned into a loft complex, witnesses described shadowy forms, a feeling of being watched, and the scent of sterilzation solutions. It is unclear whether the spirits have lingered to haunt the lofts.

Pickard Theatre - Bowdoin College

At the Pickard Theater at Bowdoin College, a technician reported seeing a lamp swinging although there was no ventilation in the room, and feeling extremely cold.

Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum

Once the Weston State Hospital, the asylum is said to be haunted by former patients who passed away there. The plentitude of paranormal phenomena heard, seen, and felt here has prompted its appearance on TV shows such as Ghost Hunters and Ghost Adventures.

Maribel Hotel

Rumor has it that this hotel, originally built in the 1800s as a resort, may once have been owned by Al Capone. Its nickname is Motel Hell because of all the strange happenings that occur here. For one thing, the whole place is said to glow by the light of a full moon, a ghostly reminder of a 1920s fire. Among the other spooky experiences here are the apparition of a little girl in a black dress, blood appearing on the walls, yells and oppressive bad feelings from the basement, and the smell of sewer gas in the restrooms. Witnesses say there is a stack of books that at least once has burst into ghostly flames, and an eerie singing sound is always heard here. Also, a spectral carriage pulled by white horses has been reported near the stables.

Wallingford Hall

Employees at this historic site say that if you come for a visit, you may see apparitions of soldiers in the barn, hear doors slamming and footsteps running on the old staircase, and feel unexplained cold spots.

Biddeford City Theatre

At this historic theater building, strange things are said to happen. There is a face above the stage, and the eyes on it seem to open, close, and look around. There are also unexplained voices and noises, and lights that flash and flicker. Witnesses say inside the building they get an eerie feeling of being watched from above.

Battery Point Light

Believed to be haunted by a former lightkeeper. People claim that they can hear him ascending the spiral staircase. People have also reported the sensation of being touched when no one is present and caretakers who have stayed there claim that something moves objects at night. There is also a rocking chair that the ghost appears to enjoy sitting in.
