Parmly Billings Library

At the 1901 Parmly Billings Library, many ghostly things are said to happen. Apparitions are seen of a tall man in white on the fifth floor, a female with brown hair and glasses on the third floor, and a cowboy and another man on the second floor. Strange things happen in the basement, such as unexplained noises, swinging light cords, ghostly visions, and an intense feeling of being watched by something unseen.

Avenue Theatre

The 1950s Art Deco Avenue Theatre is home to some strange activity. A baby’s voice can be heard crying in the upper seating areas, flickering lights have been seen when it is dark, and props are moved or hidden by unseen hands.

Bissell Mansion Restaurant and Dinner Theatre

Bissell Mansion Restaurant & Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre, inside the historic Bissell Mansion, is rumored to be haunted by more than the characters in their mystery shows. The mansion, built by Captain Lewis Bissell in 1823, is believed to be haunted by the captain himself. His apparition has been seen in the parking lot, watching his house. A ghostly woman in a white gown is said to appear too, thought to be one of Bissell’s wives. Wine glasses have been known to mysteriously disappear and reappear here as well.

Glore Psychiatric Museum

The Glore Psychiatric Museum is rumored to be haunted by long-dead patients who are still hoping that their mental illness can be cured. Apparitions seen here include a sharply dressed man and an elderly man, and in the basement, the motion detector is often set off when no one is down there. Unexplained sounds heard here include a woman’s voice asking for help, whimpering and crying. Some have seen a shadowy man who passed by them muttering, and other witnesses were frightened by a man’s apparition running along the basement hallway and shouting “Why are you here? Get out!”

Jefferson Barracks

Jefferson Barracks includes 41 historic military buildings and is rumored to be haunted by many ghosts. Building 1, built in 1900, is haunted by an older Confederate Civil War general, seen at the post commander’s office, as well as a shadowy ghost of a man who sits at a desk on the second floor. In Building 25, lights have been known to come on by themselves, and in Building 29, witnesses report footsteps, flushing toilets, and a voice shouting “Dismissed!” Building 37 is haunted by a hazy apparition, and at the Powder Magazine, a ghost sentry has been known to appear.

Jacques Guibourd Historic House - Guibourd Valle House

Jacques Guibourd Historic House, aka Guibourd Valle House, is a 1784 Creole house museum and is rumored to be haunted. Witnesses have seen apparitions, heard footsteps in the servant’s quarters, and have been awakened by banging, breaking glass, furniture being thrown and other sounds. The harpsichord has played by itself, and many other strange phenomena have been reported here as well.

Mother in Law House

The Mother in Law House was built with two halves by Captain Krammer. ONe side was for his family, and the other for his mother-in-law. Witnesses say objects are moved, footsteps have been heard, and names of guests have mysteriously appeared on Easter Eggs and it wasn’t done by the staff. Psychics have said the mother-in-law’s ghost remains behind, and she is lonely.

Little Hills Winery and Restaurant

Little Hills Winery and Restaurant is said to be haunted by two ghosts, a man and a woman, who speak French. It is believed that they lived on the site around 1900. Witnesses say boxes and other objects in the storage area are found in disarray in the morning, as if someone had had a rowdy fight there, and sometimes a couple is heard arguing in French. Dishes and silverware move on their own and cold spots have been reported as well.

Gillioz Theatre

Gillioz Theatre, which opened in 1926, is rumored to have been haunted by a ghost boy since the 1960s. The child’s apparition has most often been seen around the area of the restrooms.

Oliver Anderson House

The 1853 Oliver Anderson House is believed to be haunted by ghostly soldiers who fought Civil War battles on and near the site.
