Oakland Cemetery, established around 1783 to bury Revolutionary War soldiers, was originally called St. John’s Burial Grounds. The name was changed to Oakland Cemetery in 1875. Rampant vandalism has led to the rumors of its being haunted; three ghostly women, coming from the hill towards the cemetery’s center, are said to chase prospective wrongdoers away. A photograph was taken of three apparitions here in 2006.

Front Street Park
Remnants from a 1690 raid of French-Canadian and Indian invaders are said to haunt Front Street Park and the entire Stockade Historic District. Most of the town’s residents, families of the Dutch merchants and fur traders who settled here in 1661, were massacred in the attack.
Montrepose Cemetery
A witness visiting Montrepose Cemetery described the apparition of a long-haired woman in a flowing dress, flitting between gravesites.
Roosevelt Mansion
Roosevelt Mansion was the home of Franklin D. Roosevelt, 32nd U.S. president. It is a National Historic Site, designated as such in 1945. Witnesses say the haunting here is manifested by coldness and a sad feeling in the dining room and in Mrs. Roosevelt’s bedroom.
Goshen Historic Track
Goshen Historic Track is said to be haunted by the spirit of a jockey and his horse, who both drowned in the nearby lake early 1900s. They’ve been seen riding along the lake or chasing visitors through the dirt-road trails; other witnesses say the clip-clopping of ghostly horse hooves has come from seemingly nowhere.
Evans Mills Volunteer Ambulance Squad
The Evans Mills Volunteer Ambulance Squad, established in 1980, is said to have a couple of ghosts on the staff. The friendly spirits include an elderly woman who tinkers with the TV and an elderly man who peers in from the vehicle bay.
Scriba Intersection
The deadly Scriba Intersection at Route 104 and Klocks Corners has been the unfortunate scene of many a car crash, a two-way stop obscured by a large hill. Locals say that the park near the intersection is a gathering place for the spirits of those who have lost their lives here. Their apparitions are said to show up in shades of gray and look up and down the roads as if dreading another accident.
Old Morton Salt Plant
This former Morton Salt Plant is reported to have closed after several cave-ins crushed and killed workers. The abandoned plant is said to be haunted by the spirits of deceased employees and ghostly mining cars that still travel through the plant.
Marymount College - EF Academy
The former Marymount College merged with Fordham University, then was sold to EF Academy in 2007. It is said to be haunted by the ghosts of its founders, Father Gailhac and Mother Butler, on hand to protect the former woman’s college’s students. More sinister tales tell of ghosts who shake the beds or spy on students in the Gailhac and Gerard Halls, and evil spirits who lurk in a parking lot, remnants from a house torn down over 100 years ago, before the college was built.
Evergreen Cemetery
Rumor has it that the elusive ghost of a lady in a black dress has been seen at Evergreen Cemetery. She is said to hang out near the headstones on the top of the hill. But don’t take your eyes off her or she’ll disappear!
