The Ambler House Ruins

The circa 1750 Ambler House burned down three times: Once during the American Revolution (it was restored by Colonel John Ambler), again during the Civil War, and a third time in 1895. Its ruins are tended to by the National Park Service. The ghost here, Lydia, is said to walk the ruins awaiting the return of her love, Alexander.

Appomattox Manor

Appomattox Manor was the former plantation owned by Dr. Richard Eppes, which became Union headquarters during the Civil War. Now a restored museum, the manor is said to be haunted by the ghost of a Union soldier. So the story goes, a nurse had been hiding him in the basement wall when the Confederates took over and inspected the home. When they found some of his gear in a storage room, they arrested her. The soldier couldn’t get out of the hiding place on his own, and eventually died there. His body was found during 1953 basement work, and his ghost has been heard scratching at the walls trying to get out.

Old Post Chapel

Many Arlington National Cemetery burials started in this old military chapel, in use since the 1930s. Witnesses have reported unexplained voices and footsteps, locked doors have been known to open by themselves, and at least once, a soldier went into a room to find all the cabinets wide open. A ghostly apparition has been seen in the bridal room, which was formerly a private mourning room for families of the deceased.

Longwood University

A spooky story surrounds the statue of the Confederate Hero, dedicated Oct. 11, 1900, on High Street. Legend has it that when you can see the statue’s shadow on the wall of the camupus’ East Ruffner Building, all is well. When you cannot, the soldier’s ghost is out protecting the town with his rifle, and something bad will happen. In 2001 the East Ruffner Building was destroyed in a fire, and a photo was taken during the fire showing a ghostly soldier’s silhouette in the flames. Now the building has been reconstructed, and the soldier’s shadow can be seen again.

At the Tabb dormitory, a ghost is said to warn students of impending doom with a woman’s shrieking voice.

At Jarman Auditorium, the ghost of namesake university president Dr. Jarman has a reserved seat, filled for every event with a program and a red rose. If these items are overlooked, the light and sound boards tend to act up.

And Curry Hall is said to be haunted by the ghost of a 3-year-old boy who rode a bike into the elevator shaft and fell to his death. A campus rumor says those who ride to the 10th floor and then directly to the basement will come face to face with his ghost.

George Mason University

The crew team at George Mason University has reported seeing the ghost of an old man near the docks or dam. Legend has it that he’s Old Man Johnson, a deceased area rower who, in the 1970s, found his wife having an affair. The distraught man went out rowing and was never seen again. Some say he went off the Occoquan River dam.

The gazebo near the campus pond also is said to be haunted, by the ghost of a young man who drowned in the lake. His body was discovered by two young women in the gazebo, and his ghost is said to appear, beckoning young women to come sit with him. Some staff maintain that this is just a made-up story.

Park Lane

In the town of Calrstadt, NJ, a cobblestone road on Park Lane is believed to be a meeting place for Ku Klux Klan members a long time ago. A tunnel is buried between the trees and wells which led to the meeting spot of the members. This would be under the road itself. It is also believed that there is part of the Underground Railroad lead by Harriet Tubman passing from under Broad Street’s steep hill.

Gold Camp Tunnels

Gold Camp Road, as children we are told to stay away. As teenagers we become curious and try to investigate. As adults, we know to be wary. I have lived in Colorado Springs my whole life and I have always known of the secret behind Gold Camp Road.

Legend has it that the third tunnel collapsed as a school bus crashed into it. Apparently the bus driver either committed suicide or suffered from a heart attack. All the children died. The third tunnel is now fenced off, however one can still walk up to the dark cave. These are not the only deaths that took place in these tunnels. Not to mention, many people died building these tunnels in the 1800s. Annually, bodies wash up around the area which would cause many angered spirits. Also, let’s not forget that this area is surrounded by satan worshipers. In the 1970s and 1980s and probably still today, men are seen chanting in black robes carrying torches as they walk up past the haunted tunnels. My father has personally witnessed this as a teenager twice, while him and a friend of his snuck up there to have a few beers on the weekends. The rituals that do take place in the area would awaken spirits and demons.

In the third tunnel, the laughs and voices of children are heard, along with feeling a tugging on clothing. Tiny hand prints are also found on cars parked outside the tunnel. The second tunnel is more violently active however. People report scratches, being hit, groped, voices, and possession. The figure of a man is commonly seen as well at the end of the tunnel. Many say that when they inspect the car afterward, there are handprints and finger marks all over. Even on clean cars a hand print will occasionally appear.

This may seem like a scary story, however it is truth. I have personally experienced sightings in the second tunnel, which is the most active, considering many are too afraid to travel outside of a car to venture into the third tunnel.

On an average night of driving around with friends, we made the decision to check out the stories of Gold Camp for ourselves. We heard that if we were to drive into the second tunnel and turn off our lights the car would either move, the lights would come on, or something weird would happen. There were four of us that night, Savannah, Doug, Andy, and myself. We drove into the second tunnel, turned off the car, and put up the e-brake. We began to joke around a little, saying how it was just a scary story to keep children away, then we saw a figure pacing at the end of the tunnel, behind the car. We watched as the figure moved closer and closer, faster and faster. Eventually it reached the back of our car, so close that we could almost make out the face of a man. His head tilted as he looked at us and set his hands on the back of the car. Suddenly he was gone. We spoke of what we just saw as the figure reappeared at the end of the tunnel pacing again. We kept all eight of our eyes on this figure. Out of nowhere, the figure bolted towards our car. Doug quickly turned the car on and shoved it into drive. We raced as fast as possible out of the tunnel, so fast I thought we would fly off the side of the mountain. Once we reached a safe distance away from this thing we just saw, we caught our breath. And made sure that we all really just saw that, and of course we all did. Unfortunately, we had to drive back through the creepy dark tunnel to get back to the main road. I kept my eyes shut, not wanting to see this figure of a man again.

After reaching safety, we drove to a close by, brightly lit gas station to inspect any damage to the car. There on the dusty trunk lay the imprints of a mans hands. I will never forget this night, I am just glad nothing worse happened. However, I do wish I had caught this all on camera to show everyone what I personally experienced.

Six Flags Over Georgia

There are many ghost stories surrounding Six Flags Over Georgia. Some say a blonde girl about 9 years old was hit and killed by a car in the 1970s, and she may appear and ask guests for help, only to disappear shortly thereafter. And at the Crystal Pistol Music Hall, an actor named Joe was killed on the way to work in 1967. His ghost has been seen at the edge of the balcony watching performances, and witnesses have seen orbs and heard a man singing after the hall was closed for the night. Joe is also balmed for moving props from the stage out to the railroad tracks beside the building. The park’s railroad also is believed to be haunted. Apparitions dressed in 1800s clothing have been seen crossing the Lickskillet Railroad Bridge. They are believed to be actors in an early Six Flags show that depicted an 1800s train robbery.

El Rayos Authentic Mexican

The building that houses El Rayos Authentic Mexican Restaurant, formerly Place on Peidmont restaurant, was once a private home. Legend has it that it was inhabited by a woman and a little girl, who was run over by a car here. The woman lived here until her death of natural causes, but some say her ghost remains and even steals jewelry. Witnesses also have reported cold spots, a feeling of being watched, and being locked in the restroom by something unseen.

Cogdell Light

The Cogdell Light appears near the Okefenokee swamp late at night. Drivers go into the woods and turn off the car, then flash their headlights to call the “ghost.” Then, a greenish-yellow glow seems to come out of the woods and head straight for the car. Some say this is the ghost of a man who was decapitated in a train accident, carrying a lantern and looking for his head. Others say it is the lantern carried by the ghosts of two lovers who sneaked away together after they were forbidden to meet, and were shot by one of their fathers who mistook them for robbers.
