This home has a history of tragedy ranging from a lovers’ suicide pact, to a man who died of heartbreak when he found out about his wife’s affair; the woman in the pact and the heartbroken man are both reported here. One strange report involves a man in a black cape chasing children to the door. Objects move by themselves, unaccounable noises are heard, and numerous other apparitions have been seen.
Oxford is the second-oldest surviving university in the world, dating back to 1096. The most commonly reported ghost is that of a former master named Obadiah Walker, seen in the front quad. King Charles I, beheaded in his prime, is seen at Christ Church College, as has one of his commanders (executed for treason). Every other college here has its share of activity; the Queens College has a phantom clergyman, St. Peter’s College is haunted by a set of twins and a student who hanged himself, and other unexplained phenomenon happens throughout.
The University of Cambridge dates back to 1209 and has been ranked as one of the best universities in the world. With quite a history, it should be no surprise that Cambridge has had its share of paranormal reports. In the Old Master’s Lodge, Henry Butts took his own life as his reputation was slandered; it is believed he was exorcized in 1904. In the H Staircase of Chapel Court, a foul-smelling and grotesque looking head has manifested. The Gibbs Building is said to be haunted by a teacher who was discovered dead inside of a coffin. A pale man has been seen in the dog cemetery and in Clare, a dead professor who donated his body to science apparently didn’t have his wish completely fulfilled; he now haunts this area.
The Abbot of Woburn denounced the king and was hanged for his opinion; he was seen standing beside the old tree from which he hanged, yet, is no longer thought to be there. In the Butler’s Pantry, a strange brown blur is seen (said to resemble a monk). Duchess Mary Russell (who died in an aviation accident) is said to linger here; her presence is picked by a heavy sadness felt by visitors. The 6th Duchess from this court is also said to haunt here, seen as a full-bodied apparition.
The White Lady of Tower was said to have seen her husband’s murder and, soon after, died of grief. She is seen near the tower, sometimes looking out the window. A man known as the Black Prince also appears here; he is said to be a bad omen. Other shadows and apparitions have been seen here as well.
An attempted murder on Ernest Augustus, former Duke of Cumberland, failed. Joseph Sellis, the valet of the Duke, was summoned, but found dead with his throat slit. It turned out that Sellis had attempted to assassinate the Duke, but failed. Sellis is sometimes seen with blood gushing down his neck and the stench of blood surrounds him.
In the 18th century, a woman was murdered and then beheaded somewhere around here, but her murdered attempted to dispose of her here. While he was caught, she has been seen ever since, always covered in blood.
A mother and her child were walled up alive and are still felt here. A Grey Lady walks between the castle and the church; her appearance is said to be a bad omen.
Jerry Abershaw, nicknamed “The Laughing Highwayman”, was known to terrorize this area before his hanging. He is seen on horseback riding through the common. The spirit of an escaped convict is also said to haunt this area.
