The Cedarhurst Mansion Estate was originally built in 1823 by Stephen Ewing. While visiting the house, a relative, Sally Carter, died of a short illness at the mansion in 1837. The first reports of a haunting was around 1919 after a teenage boy who slept at the house had a dream about her tombstone falling over. Other family members laughed it off, but an inspection of her burial plot revealed it indeed had fallen over due to stormy weather. People who previously slept and lived in the mansion reported seeing her ghost watching over them as they rested, while other reported hearing and seeing her walking around the house and its grounds. Voices have been heard, and electrical appliances and other articles have been tampered with or inexplicably stopped working. This includes furniture being moved around and pillows being removed and scattered throughout the house. Doors opened and closed of their own accord, and smaller items were frequently broken or went missing. The house now serves as the clubhouse for a gated community, but people still report seeing the ghost of Sally Carter around the Cedarhurst Mansion.
Dating back to 1832, this old home is known locally as “The Plantation House.” It operated for many years as a bed and breakfast, but as of 2014 it is on the market for any interested buyers. There have long been sightings reported of the ghost of Mr Davis, the former owner of the house who took his life in the 1920s. He flirts with women who stay at the house, touching their backs and blowing against their necks.
A stone star fort in the Maryland Panhandle, Fort Frederick Maryland was built in the 1750s to defend Maryland from French and Indian raiders. During the American Revolution it was used as a prisoner of war camp for soldiers surrendered at Yorktown. It was a Federal outpost during the civil war when it saw its only shots fired in anger as some of Lee’s men on their way to Gettysburg fired a few shots at the fort’s walls to make sure the soldiers inside kept their heads down.
It fell into disrepair and was mended in the 1930’s as part of the public works programs of FDR.
Historical reenactors in the fort have frequently reported a presence or hostile feelings coming from the front right bastion, or of being followed out of it. Interestingly people re-enacting Scottish regiments sense a presence in this same place but it is friendly and curious. Four Scottish regiments were among those surrendered at Yorktown in 1781.
This century-old building was purchased in 2012 and is slated to be renovated into condominiums. It was once a fashionable hotel, but fell into disrepair and was known as a hang-out for the homeless for several decades. There are rumors about a “ghost bride” that some believe to haunt the premises.
Mary Baldwin College is a four-year liberal arts women’s college based in Staunton, VA. It was founded in 1842, and was originally called the Augusta Female Seminary.
There are several reported ghosts at the college:
A ghost known as “Richard” haunts the several areas, including the Administration Building, Wenger Hall and Grafton Library. At least one worker reports seeing him as a a blue-uniformed soldier, with gold buttons on his jacket. In general he is believed to be a playful spirit, hiding items and moving them around.
McClung dormitory is said to be haunted as well. A pale white figure has been seen floating above certain beds in that building, and a child’s handprint mysterious appears from time to time in the room where Mary Julia Baldwin once lived. Items are moved, inexplicably.
A security guard swears that he distinctly heard the sound of someone jumping off the diving board and splash into the pool in the King Building, but when he went to the pool to investigate there was no one there, and not a single ripple in the water.
There is even a “celebrity ghost” at MBC – that of actress Tallulah Bankhead, who attended the school in the early 1900s. She allegedly plays with the lights in the Collins Theatre, and moves objects around.
This home was built by the Pettlon family back in 1913, and has been in the family all that time. It is now for sale as of 2014. A member of the Pettlon family has shared with us her paranormal experiences there:
“Visiting my Grandmother in the family home I experienced visitations from passed relatives. Usually upstairs in the north large bedroom while sleeping in the high top bed. A cold hand would cross my face to wake me and I would see a distinct hovering presence. I knew it was trying to converse with me. There have been numerous remarks from other family members about passing figures and feeling someone else in the room. Now the 100 year old house is on the market and and while there packing… the house is loud with noise from slamming doors and flying objects. Cold spaces when you walk a room ..and a feeling of a very angry unhappy aura. This house was built by Mom and Dad and six kids were raised here.”
People who move into these apartments see shadows that move around there apartments, and hear strange noises. In some apartments, the housework is done during the night when people are asleep, without any apparent explanation.
A strange presence is felt in some of the rooms, accompanied by inexplicable cold spots. You feel like you are being watched while staying at the bed and breakfast.
Shea’s Performing Arts Center opened in 1926 and is said to be haunted by its namesake, Mr. Michael Shea, who passed away in 1936. Not only does his ghost watch performances from his own special seat, witnesses say they have seen an apparition that matches his portrait. The ghost has been heard saying “Isn’t this magnificent?” while surveying restoration work.
