The current Montezuma Castle Hotel is built on top of two separate hotels which previously burnt down. There have been several reports of hauntings here. Opera music is heard when no one is around, and the ghost of the former proprietor walks around the hotel’s corridors at night. Back when the house was still privately owned, the ghost of a young girl in Victorian style clothing would appear in bedrooms around the building.

The community of Indian Meadows and the adjacent community of Shady Grove are both built over the top of an American Indian Cherokee burial ground. Haunting have been reported in both houses, Burgundy Drive (the street that runs through the communities) and in the adjacent woods. Dark figures and shadows can be seen moving about in the forests near people’s homes, and people who venture outside at night often hear people following them. However, when they go to investigate, they find no one. However, people sometimes find claw marks outside their homes. They also see ghostly figures rush past their houses at night. Inside their homes, people hear voices calling their names, have electrical appliances go on and off by themselves, have doors slam of their own accord, and sometimes see or hear people in their house.

The ghost here is called “Charlie,” and he’s been seen for years and years by both staff and visitors alike. Though most seem to agree he’s a playful sort, no one can really seem to agree on the story behind “Charlie”. Some say he was shot by the police and died in room #18. Others say he hanged himself there after being rejected by a loved one. Still others say he died peacefully (again, in room #18) and loved the place so much he just refused to leave in the afterlife.
