Hotel Wapello

The old-fashioned hotel, furnished with original antiques, used to be a schoolhouse and a law office. In 1906 the place became the Commercial Hotel, which became the premier place to stay in town after their main rival burnt to the ground. Now a bed and breakfast inn, the place is rumoured to be haunted. Guests claim to have disembodied footsteps on the staircase, and faint laughter has been heard emanating from empty rooms.

Anderson House Hotel

Parts of this historic bed and breakfast inn date back to the 1850’s, and it’s not surprise that the place is said to be haunted. The most famous ghost in the old-fashioned establishment is a female spirit known as ‘Sarah’. It is said that she was under the impression that her husband had perished in a steamboat accident (alas, he wasn’t even aboard), and committed suicide due to her despair. The proprietor of the hotel says the spook is very friendly, and has been known to leave dimes for the owner to express her gratitude for the way the hotel is being run.

Wheat Growers Hotel

This 1918 hotel has a sole ghost. The apparition of a woman has been spotted on several occasions standing behind an upper floor window, gazing down into the street. Her association with the building is not known, but local folk claim she was associated with a speakeasy housed in the basement during the Prohibition era.

Chester House Inn and Antiques

The 1887 hotel primarily served railroad passengers and workers until the late-twentieth century. Now a delightful bed and breakfast inn with an adjoining antiques store, employees and guests staying at the establishment have reported many strange instances of paranormal activity. The place is rumoured to have been a brothel in the past, and people passing by have reported seeing a pair of ghostly women in old-fashioned clothing waving at them from the second floor of the building. Locals have surmised that they are Pearl and Ruby, who were both former prostitutes when the place was a bordello between World War I and World War II. The other spook haunting the old edifice is a male presence known as Clarence, who froze to death on the balcony of Room 4. Disembodied footsteps supposedly belonging to him have been heard wandering through the building in the small hours, and new owners are always warned by departing owners to appease the spirit, or else face his wrath.

1897 McNulty House

The nineteenth-century historic house is haunted by the spirit of Lillian McNulty, who passed away in 1957. In her will, she left instructions for the building to become a library or pioneer museum, which was respected for several decades before the house was once again put on the market. Ever since the place returned to its status as a private residence, residents have reported seeing the apparition of a woman in an old-fashioned dress wandering through the house. Others have seen her gazing out of the kitchen window in the direction of the church she used to attend. It is suspected that a male presence may also haunt the old edifice, as a female visitor once reported seeing a gentleman with a top hat and cane standing at the foot of her bed, who faded away when she tried to speak to him.

Century House Inn

Built in 1907, the former county hospital is now a bed and breakfast inn. The current owners have reported the spirit of a man roaming the building, and a female guest felt an unseen, unwelcome guest climb into bed with her. The proprietors consulted a doctor who used to own the place, and were astonished to find that the reports dated back almost half a century, when patients would complain about disembodied footsteps in the hallway and on the staircase.
