Scott County Historical Museum

Originally constructed in 1892 after the county seat moved to Scottsburg, the building served for many years as the district poor farm. During conversion to house the historical society, staff and workers allegedly encountered resistance of a paranormal kind. Visitors have reported hearing babies crying, disembodied footsteps on the second floor and unusual scents that come and go. On one occasion, an employee who locked up for the night witnessed all the lights in the building turn on again, despite the fact that the place was empty. The museum now offers private ghost tours.

At the time it was the second-longest tunnel in the world, but there were many gruesome deaths and accidents associated with its construction. For more than 150 years people have regularly claimed to have seen ghostly apparitions throughout the tunnel. It is illegal to walk the tunnel without explicit permission from the authorities – it is regularly patrolled by local police. (It also still has quite a bit of train traffic.)
