From its construction in 1868 to 1959, the manor house has been home to various members of the Rothschild family, some of whom are still believed to haunt what is now a museum. Visitors to the house have heard slamming doors and felt cold spots, A sad entity has been reported on the upper floor, and is believed to that of a family member who committed suicide nearby.
Although the bed and breakfast is no longer in operation and now a private residence, the spirits who haunt the historic manor house have not moved on. The apparition of a gentleman in old-fashioned clothing has been seen on the staircase, and in a bedroom on the uppers floor, the owners have reported smelling cigar smoke when there is no one around. The sound of piano music has been heard in the house, despite the fact there is no piano present in the building. The ghost of William Hill, who died after an illness, has been seen in the parlour room where he passed away.
This glorious 1899 mansion, now a hotel, is home to several resident spirits. The first is that of a red haired woman in a white gown, who has been seen floating through the hotel and on the stairs. She is believed to be the apparition of Ann Starrett, the namesake of the building. Other apparitions include George Starrett, former owner of the house, and the “Nanny”, who has been seen in a black dress wandering through the house and keeping an eye on the guests.
Tenants in the building have been locked out of their offices, and had things thrown at them by an unseen force. The bell tower is haunted by an unknown entity, which rings the bells late at night or in the early hours of morning. Security guards have reported seeing floating shadowy apparitions on various floors of the building, and outside the old council chambers, the sound of someone coughing can be heard when there is no one around.
There are believed to be at least five apparitions that haunt this historic bed and breakfast. Guests have reported seeing the apparition of a hostile man in a brocade vest, who has been known to push guests around. Other apparitions seen include a woman in a grey dress, often accompanied by a ghostly child, and the apparition of a shadowy gravedigger holding a corpse.
The historic inn was built in 1884, and has been restored and renovated to its former glory by the current inn owners. Guests and staff alike have reported paranormal activity in the inn, including lights turning on and off, strange knocking noises and furniture that moves around by itself. Guests staying in the inn have reported a bossy spirit known as Cora, the wife of a former inn keeper. She has been seen wandering through various parts of the old building, and taps and people around in a disapproving manner. The shadowy apparition of a man has been seen floating around the corridors of the building is believed to be a former inn keeper, the husband of Cora, and is known to staff as John. The third ghost has mainly been seen in Room #48, and is known as Herschel. He appears to staff as a glowing apparition, and is known to mess up rooms and to rearrange furniture and the luggage of guests. Visitors have also seen Herschel sitting in a rocking chair on the front porch of Deerfield Inn.
Creve Coeur Park has a legend from the 1800s about the beautiful daughter of a Native-American chief who married a warrior. When he died on a hunting trip, the heartbroken woman jumped from the high cliff and died in the waters below. Her ghost is said to be heard crying, and her apparition has been seen on full moon nights. Sometimes the ghost re-creates her death by jumping off the cliff, then disappears. Incidentally, Creve Coeur is French for “broken heart.”
A fisherman’s ghost is purported to haunt Upper Big Lake. So the story goes, the fisherman accidentally killed his nephew with a shotgun, and the nephew’s ghost came back and drowned his uncle while he was fishing on the lake.
Southeast Missouri State University’s Cheney Hall is rumored to be haunted by a female student who committed suicide in a bathtub. Folks say now the door slams by itself and unexplained noises are heard in the room. The Music Building is also said to be haunted by apparitions and slamming doors, and the Rose Theatre is believed to contain the ghost of Mary, a French trader’s wife who murdered her husband. It’s said that Mary likes to make herself known by playing tricks when a play with a violent storyline is put on. Other rumors about the theater involve the ghost of an old man and a blood stain on the concrete that can’t be removed.
