People have reported seeing an apparition standing at the far end of the third floor corridor, which vanishes when approached. A ghostly presence is also believed to haunt the innkeeper’s quarters, and is believed to be a former owner.
The bed and breakfast is reportedly haunted. Music and strange noises have been heard in the basement late at night when there is no around, and ghostly voices have been heard in the rooms of guests.
Historic Lorimier Cemetery from the early 1800s is home to a phenomenon known as the Tapping Ghost. It is a sensation of something tapping you on the shoulder, usually making visitors think a nut has fallen from a tree. The tapping repeats, usually until the visitor gets freaked out and hurries away. Female visitors also have experienced their hair being tugged.
Darlene’s One Stop, a sports bar and grill once known as Mac’s Cafe, is said to be haunted by a man who ised to live in an apartment above the restaurant. Jack Schaefer was an explosive character and an abusive boyfriend and stepfather. In one incidence he was found firing a shotgun into the windows at his girlfriend and her children. One of the children, a 19-year-old son, fired back to protect is family and blew off Schaefer’s head at point-blank range. Now, Scheafer’s ghost has been known to appear in the apartment hallway in the clothes he was wearing the day he died: hiking boots, flannel shirt and jeans. Furthermore, lights and shower faucets turn on by themselves, and many other strange and unexplained things have occurred here as well.
Hill Park Cemetery is known for containing the burial site of Frank James, the older brother of outlaw Jesse James. His wife Ann Ralston James is buried here as well. Witnesses say a glowing, misty figure appears here, walking over the hill at night. Ghostly Civil War soldiers are said to show up here from time to time as well.
White apparitions, seemingly a woman in a nightgown, have been seen here, sometimes following visitors. The apparition disappears at the cemetery gate, as if it is unable, or perhaps unwilling, to go past it.
Policemen at the Espanola Police Station watching the Sally Port on the security cameras were surprised to see the ghostly immage of a human figure walking through a locked, gated and secured area without triggering any alarms. The policemen say they have experienced other strange things at the station, such as the feeling of something breathing down their necks and unexplained sounds.
This late eighteenth century house is now a private residence, but the house is believed to be home to a single apparition. Visitors to the house have reported various sightings of the apparition of a sea captain on the stairs and in the attic of the house. People have heard doors opening and slamming shut, and heard loud footsteps on the stairs when there is no one around.
The Palace Hotel was formerly a brothel that closed down during the war, when it was refurbished and opened as a historic hotel. The Palace Hotel is believed to be haunted by at least ten spirits, including the former sea captain who constructed the hotel. The most well known apparition seen in the hotel is the ghost of a lady in an old-fashioned blue dress. She mostly appears in Room #3 and #4, and her presence is often accompanied by the aroma of perfume. The doors of these rooms often fly open at night when there is no one around, and people staying in these rooms have reported hearing moans and having their beds shake violently. A happy presence is felt on the lower floor of the hotel, and is believed to be that of Captain Tibbals, the former owner and builder of the hotel. In Room #3, people have reported seeing an old woman in a black dress standing near the stove in the kitchen of the room, but when they approach her, she vanishes. The ghost of friendly little boy, known to staff as Adam, has been seen running around on the third floor of the hotel before fading away, along with a menacing shadowy apparition that has been known to follow guests throughout the third floor corridor. In the hotel basement, the apparition of a homeless man wearing a plaid shirt has been seen by staff. The former owners of the hotel had given him a residence in the hotel, and after he passed away, he returned to the hotel and has haunted the building ever since. The apparition of an Indian woman and her ghostly children haunt various levels of the building, where they apparently died in a fire. Various other misty apparitions and paranormal activity have been reported in the historic hotel.
