Old Ursuline Convent

You are here Home  > Historical Buildings >  Old Ursuline Convent

This old convent and its “Casket Girls” star in a local vampire legend. Back in the 1700s, girls were sent here from French convents to find suitable men to marry. They carried coffin-shaped chests, which presumably held their belongings. When the local citizens disrespected the girls, forcing them into prostitution or worse, the girls were taken back to France. It is said that the Sisters of the Ursuline Convent placed the casket-like chests on the third floor with the doors and windows sealed. But later when the chests were discovered and opened, they were empty. Folks speculate that the girls brought European vampires here in the caskets, and the shuttered windows open at night so they may roam the streets for their prey. The Convent says the rumors are false and nothing is stored on the third floor; others maintain that the windows are nailed shut with nails that have been presonally blessed by the Pope.
