This jail dates back to the end of the 19th century. The local sheriff lived on the ground floor and basement – inmates were housed in the top floor. The small building out back housed female prisoners. It hasn’t held an inmate since the mid 20th century, but some people still swear they hear the metallic clank of cell doors and strange moaning sounds coming from inside the building.
The building has been used recently by the Jefferson County Elections Office, and is intended to become a museum in the near future.

Our family went here on a Halloween Haunted Tour about 4years ago. When we went to the jail my husband and I were taking pictures with our cell phones and suddenly-the phone cameras just started taking pictures by themselves-without us clicking the button. BOTH of our phones did this at the same time! It happened for about 3 minutes then stopped. That had never happened before with our phones, and hasn’t happened since.
