The ornate Missouri Theatre was built in 1928, designed to resemble the Paris Opera House. A former owner is said to linger here in spirit, operating the theater curtains and making strange clanking sounds.

I worked for the Missouri Symphony Society, which is headquartered in the Missouri Theatre, for two years. There were always rumors of paranormal activity, but I was skeptical until I experienced it firsthand. I heard footsteps in the auditorium when it was completely empty and all doors were locked. I called out “Is anyone there?” and received no reply. Then the footsteps began again. I was in the upper balcony at the time and the footsteps came from the center aisle on the main floor of the auditorium. The entire theatre was empty and all doors were locked. I had been locking the emergency exit that is accessed from the stairwell in the upper balcony when I heard the footsteps.
I also experienced the back door to the administration area opening on its own, although it was deadbolted and also had a security chain. Even after I closed it and relocked the deadbolt and the security chain, the door opened again within minutes. At the time, the back door led to a secured alley with a gate and there was no one there. I was the only person in the administration area and the deadbolt was not accessible from the outside. To this day, the sound of the deadbolt unlocking and the chain sliding gives me chills, especially since I knew both were securely in place.
