The 1830 Magnolia Plantation has a main plantation house, slaves’ quarters, store, blacksmith shop and slave hospital. The site, built by Ambrose Lecomte II and his wife Julia Buard, is now owned by the National Park Service and is believed to be haunted by mistreated slaves. Reports say that the plantation’s slaves were punished using leg stocks and starvation, and were crowded into tiny living spaces. Rumor has it that the slaves used voodoo to curse their masters, as is evident in the enslaved blacksmiths’ crosses over the family’s graves–West African voodoo symbols are hidden within the design. Witnesses to the supernatural activity here say apparitions have been seen, motion detectors go off for no reason, and disembodied voices can be heard.
