The Lanier House, the oldest documented residence in the city, was built in 1830 by Danville’s first mayor, Captain James Lanier. Although the structure now holds law offices, it has been the office of the city’s first pediatrician as well as a private residence. It is said to be haunted; witnesses attest to seeing apparitions and hearing mysterious voices and footsteps inside the building.

My family who were the longest occupants and second owners of the Linear Wyllie House for 85 years. I can assure you that there has never been ghost before until Danville needed tourist…..Nonsense….
J.N.Wyllie
With the greatest respect to J.N. Wyllie’s post above, our family were later owners of this residence. My grandparents Dr. and Mrs. Samuel Newman the pediatrician and later Dr. Newman’s daughter (my mother) Mrs. Naomi Newman Macht. My mother and father were married in the backyard of the residence in 1941 when Dr. Newman owned it. And all growing up as kids, we were convinced the house was haunted in the 1950’s-1990’s especially at the top of the stairway inside the building in the back of the residence that led from the back door to the second floor. Many times we would see moving apparitions on the second floor in mirrors. And the latest owner of the home has shared many stories similar to ours of events they have experienced in the house since his law firm has owned the residence which came as no surprise to me. That old home is filled with the happiest of memories. And some haunted ones too.
Okay, apparently I was wrong, and please forgive me. Jon, your grandfather, Dr. Newman was my pediatrician. Danville loved your grandparents. Thank you.
Please accept my apologies. JNW
