Kalamazoo Civic Theatre is said to be haunted by the ghost they call Thelma Mertz. Reportedly, a theater youth group concocted a story to explain the theater’s ghostly presence. They decided Thelma was an actress who was dumped by her lover and, heartbroken, threw herself off the balcony. The ghost’s true identity is unknown, but the spirit plays the piano, walks across the stage, turns all the lights off, closes doors, and shows up as an apparition from time to time.
