A ghost locals call “Wendal” supposedly haunts the fort, and has appeared on several photographs over the years. It is believed he died of Yellow Fever during the Civil War.

    1. Myself, my husband and a friend visiting from out of town were visiting the fort one day about noon. We were walking past what appeared to be cells on the right side as you enter. I’ve always been sensitive, yet for some reason that day, I was walking ahead of them both about 2 or 3 cells. Suddenly I hear both of them say in unison, “Did you see that”? Our friend was not a believer, in fact had been quite skeptical, but not after that. They described seeing a soldier walking straight through the brick divider wall between rooms! Both saw it, and it shook them. I only regret I didn’t take a photo to have one to share.
