I was actually a student here for quite a few years, and lived in Ellender until last year. My roommate, A, worked at the front desk to let drunk students in throughout the night, until 3 am. The first night she worked I waited up for her, and when she came in she just looked at me and said “Can you stay with me next time?” I asked her what had happened and she said. “Look, I make jokes about Helen Ellender all the time. Her creepy portrait is right by the entrance so of course I do. But I swear, something happened and I have no clue how. The doors slammed open, and the lights went off. Just for a minute, right at 2. That last hour was the scariest of my life, I swear.” But heres the thing about the doors slamming open. You literally cannot slam them. They lock magnetically, requiring a keycard to unlock from the outside, and theres a switch at the desk to open them. But they cannot slam, because of the mechanism used to open them by switch. They will always, and have always, opened at a crawl. Not to mention, no one had come in all night so the doors were firmly closed and magnetically locked.
