Cathedral of San Carlos Borromeo

You are here Home  > Historical Buildings >  Cathedral of San Carlos Borromeo

The Cathedral of San Carlos Borromeo, originally built in 1770, has been in operation for more than two centuries, but as legend has it, it wasn’t haunted until the 1920s. According to witnesses, the Royal Presidio Chapel is home to some spirits: A priest’s apparition has been seen, lighted candles have floated up and down the aisles, and bells have rung by themselves in the middle of the night. The Old Rectory Building, not to be outdone, also has some mysterious residents. Witnesses there have had a reassuring pat from an unseen hand and heard footsteps, chairs rocking, stairs creaking and rattling sounds.

  1. Don’t be worried about this ghost he is friendly. I was at the church looking for someone as my daughter was a student of the school there. I went inside at a non mass time during the day. I walked in the main doors not thinking anything of what I was experiencing. As I walked in the main double doors I heard an amazing beautiful instrument. I don’t know what type of instrument was. It sounded like a piano of sorts. As I walked toward the alter I noticed I couldn’t hear the music as loud as I could in the back. This is unusual since normally the music is load with speakers. the candles were all lit on the alter. This is unusual as the candles are only on during mass and then put out. I realized the alter looked like mass was being offered got a weird feeling and bolted out. I went into the main office and told them what was happening. They said well……and told me what was happening probably.. I had heard of it before. One of the ghosts is a past resident priest and he offers mass on occasion. I have heard this same ghost is seen walking the rectory too. If I’m going to come across a ghost that’s at least a peaceful one.
