The ghost of an old woman and her dog is said to wander the area around Desoto Falls. Allegedly the ghost of the old woman was angered at not having a properly marked grave after thieves stole her burial money so she wandered the hills. The legend has it that locals were so unnerved by her unnatural wanderings that they took up a collection to have a tombstone erected which dramatically reduced her wanderings.

  1. I’m from Mentone, AL. Grew up there. The ghost is of Granny Dollar, a mountain legend who was a prominent local citizen and beloved by many while she was alive. It is said that her dog followed her everywhere she went. What is left of her old house sits just east of DeSoto Pkwy.

    • I was at Desoto falls around November, 2013 with a few friends. We was actually working on assignment in the area and had taken lunch. So they wanted to explore the area cause it was their first visit there. When we Got there No one was around. We had walked out on the rock’s and I come back to the upper ground of the flat part close to the entrance. I saw an older woman with her dog. I thought it was strange cause out of nowhere she appeared like she had walked up there due to no car being there for her to have drove up in. She never spoke talked to us or even spoke to us. She did not look like a ghost but I did get a strange feeling about her being there. So who knows I could have encountered her presence.
