Two separate entities reside at Merrehope after their deaths. One is called Eugenia after a former daughter of the master of the house, though she herself died long before he purchased the place. She is considered a benign and comforting spirit. The other ghost appears to occupy the Periwinkle room and most consider this ghost to be a more mischievous and disturbing spirit.

When I was a kid my sister was married there and during the wedding rehearsal I was told do not go up stairs in a very stern and angry way by an very old woman who was very creepy and I assumed worked there. I found this very odd and it made me very curious. As I went up the steps slowly I just remember this disturbing feeling and I began to sweat and as I got to the top of the stairs I approached a door down the hall that was cracked and slightly opened, as I approached the door and reached to open it the door slammed shut and locked itself in a loud and aggressive way like it was telling me I should not be up there. I never ran so fast and I don’t even remember running down the stairs I was so scared. The most creepy thing about all this is you remember the so called old creepy lady that approached me and sternly told me do not go up stairs, well nor did anybody know who I was talking about I never saw this old creepy lady again the hole evening we were there for the wedding rehearsal or again the next day of the wedding. I’m not crazy or did I imagine this, that place is very haunted. That was 30 years ago and it still gives me chills.
Responded to an alarm on a Sunday afternoon. Another Officer and I were standing in the middle hallway on the bottom floor and the employee was in the gift shop trying to reset the alarm. I could see up the stairs and about 18″ of the rungs on the 2nd floor railing. There was a flash of dark movement but no shape, moving left to right across the 2nd floor. Knowing the history and stories of the old house, the other Officer and I checked 2nd floor and found nothing.
