Now housing the Lake County History Center, this imposing building was for many years, the Poor House. In the 1800s, and up until the 1970s, this was the place of last resort for the indigent, abandoned, and in many cases, insane. Both men and women were housed there, in separate quarters.
A night time tour of the building yields things seen and unseen. On the main floor, footsteps are heard shuffling through empty halls. Disembodied voices are both heard and captured electronically, sharing names, sending messages and telling visitors to “get out”. In the dormitory floors, the ghost of the matron, a Mrs. White frequently appears. Her dour expression seen in a hallway photograph remains on her pale face during this afterlife. In the basement of the building there are locking cells, once used to hold the dangerous and insane inmates. The dank walls here echo with voices, and orbs of light can be seen flashing through the building. Over the years, there have been many deaths, burials on the grounds, suicides by hanging.
