Catherine Howard, the 5 wife of Henry the 8th was arrested here. Probably his worst wife she was young and sexy when he was getting old and fat. She slept around and got caught, which was high treason. faced with arrest she ran screaming down a hall way to try and beg Henry’s forgiveness, hoping his affection might spare her. HE was locked in the chapel, praying for her soul, the locked doors keeping her from his sight.
For many years after along that gallery leading to the upper entrance to the chapel a woman’s voice was heard screaming in the night, believed to be Howard, it happened so often the hall was renamed the screaming gallery.
It has not been heard since the fire in 1990’s damaged that particular part of the palace. To follow the idea that some hauntings are ‘recordings imprinted on the area, it would stand to reason the damage and rebuilding to the area reset/unset the haunting.
