At Queen’s Road, a 1740s legend tells a spooky story about a headless ghost. So the story goes, Samuel Pettyham was being driven home in a carriage one night when the horse abruptly stopped. Pettyham opted to walk the rest of the way, and when he got near home, he saw someone walking with a lantern. When he went to meet the stranger, what he saw sent him hightailing it back up Queen’s Road, never to return. It was a man with his head hewn off, almost as far down as the shoulders. Legend has it that the headless man was a ship captain in love with a beautiful woman who once lived in Pettyham’s house. Another man vying for her affection attacked the captain, bent on ridding himself of competition, and the killer was never tried for the crime. The captain’s ghost still roams the area looking for a resolution. The site was featured on Creepy Canada.
