Johnson-Sanderson Mansion

You are here Home  > Historical Buildings >  Johnson-Sanderson Mansion

This home, built in the 1880’s, was occupied mainly by the Johnson family, a wealthy retail family and later by the Sandersons, who served Jonesboro as the cities Mayoral family. It has served as mainly residence including Arkansas State student renters, but also as a tea room.

Seances and Ouija board use was prevalent with one home owner that lived here and brought about some odd, unexplained occurrences including a time when a Maury Povich show was on TV about Ouija boards, that would not turn off of any television sets in the house. Another was a daughter of a friend that was sassing off to her mother in the house and then got hit very hard upside the head by an unseen force and had to go to the hospital, it is told. There is a large closet upstairs, that some older Jonesboro residents remember playing in as children. One lady recalls she would never play in this closet. “There was something about it that I didn’t like”, she says. Others have similar stories about the same closet. During the board use there were two spirits that identified themselves. One was Bobby and another Andrew. Records show a Bobby passed away and is buried in a neighboring cemetery. There is no record of any Andrew. There are accounts of doors opening and closing, a music harp that plays by itself, cold drafts of movement in upstairs bedrooms and hallway. The most disturbing was sight of a hooded figure moving a wardrobe across the room in the middle of the night after furniture had been re arranged earlier that day.

  1. I was across the street picking my sisters up and I saw a hooded figure in a window.
Someone else asked if I saw it too, so it has to be either a decoration or apparition.

I lived in this same house until late 2016. While there, I can honestly say that nothing paranormal occurred. It’s an old place that creeks and can seem a bit unusual or even eerie, but not once did I feel a presence. The prospect of turning a home into a tourist attraction seems to be at work here.
