The 1820 Poinsett Bridge, named for Joel Roberts Poinsett, was is one of the oldest in the state. It has a 14-foot Gothic arch and is no longer in use, and is rumored to be haunted. Folks say the ghost of a slave who was once hanged here may let out a loud scream and cause visitors’ cars not to start.

    1. I was at the bridge one night around 2 am an I was standing right by the arch and the people I was with were visuable, I heard the scream of the slave and saw him hanging in front of the arch, I heard footsteps above me crossing the bridge, my crew was not up there at the time…..

    2. 72 Baxter Hughes Road is definitely haunted. It is in Newland, NC. It is on a back road out of the town, located on Squirrel Creek Road. Before we moved in there, some said it was haunted. I believe for sure that it was. I always felt someone watching me in a middle room upstairs. Inn the kitchen dishes in the cabinet would clatter. A wine glass flung from the sink toward my son n law. I believe we were the only ones there whoever, it liked. This house has been in existence since 1800. It began as a log house, then built on when children came along. It is now a huge place with a walk around porch. The kitchen used to be off the side porch, it caught fire and was torn down in early 1900. Another kitchen was built in the back of the house. The original log cabin is in the master room downstairs. It is covered over with sheet rock. Sometimes when all is quiet you can hear someone talking low. It has been in the Hughes family for as long as built. There is a Spring house to the side, and it is very eerie in there. I always felt like someone was watching me from inside as I sat on the porch. It is covered with trees, but visible. There is a huge graveyard right above the house on the mount.

    3. I was there last year in daylight hours. Walked down to the creek from the steps to the left as you approach the bridge. While walking along the creeks edge…away from the bridge, I started to hear muffled conversation as if you were hearing this from “the next room” but couldn’t make out what was being said. Then started to hear the muffled sound of drumming. A few yards away was a tree laid across the creek and as I passed the fallen tree, the voices and the drums stopped. I walked on further but nothing. I turned and walked back towards the bridge and as I past the tree, it started again. I walked up to the bridge, nothing. Crossed the bridge and walked on the other side of the creek down to where the tree was but heard nothing. Went back down to where I had heard it and it all started again! Again, this was in the daytime…

    4. I was told by a older brother the stories told of his friends visiting and saying “redeyes” three times… And that we would hear a wolf cry and possible see the red eyes of something pursue us… as had by those he had heard stories about. So at the age of 17 or so, bored one night with a group of friends, I suggested we go to the bridge and try for ourselves to experience for ourselves something paranormal. I heard from the top of the hill, what I would describe as a Native American war cry, after I invoked the name the 3rd time…As we all ran back to the parking area, I heard load thudding sounds as if a large masses were hitting the ground. The van didn’t want to crank, as if the once non problematic battery was low charge. It is commonly believed that when this occurs, it is a sign that paranormal experiences manifest with the help of drawing energy from batteries.

    5. We wandered there one night to see a hanging man from the bridge, a ghostly Indian figure with fire for eyes pointed to the hanging man and screamed.
We continued walking up to the bridge only to hear the muffled screams of a stone mason trapped inside the bridge.
After admiring the different lights in the trees around us, we returned to our truck only to discover it wouldn’t start, dead battery.
Is it haunted? I dunno, maybe I guess.
