The 1883 Griggs Mansion was turned into apartments, and then an art school in 1939. It has many ghosts, including a maid who hanged herself on the fourth floor landing in 1915; gardener Charles Wade, who has been heard flipping through books in the library; a thin man in a black suit and top hat; a child who has been seen floating above a bed; and a teenage girl named Amy. Besides apparitions, many other phenomena have been reported here, such as doors and windows opening by themselves, footsteps, coughs and shattering light bulbs.

My parents lived in the carriage house behind 476 summit and 9 years back in the 70’s. There are living quarters about the carriage garage. There has been many stories they have told me along with their friends. Many night while they were sleeping they would wake to all the faucets turning on at the same time. They were original to the home and you would have to turn the faucets 7 or 8 time to turn them on all the way. Other accounts they would have were in the middle of the night they would hear someone playing solitaire. When they would wake there were cards on there table in a solitaire game. Many mornings they would wake up to bells they had on their door swinging when the alarm was to go off. Things would move around in the main living room when they were in the other room, The table would be set when they would get home from work. Other times a glass would float by and drop on the floor in the living room. They would hear thumps and thuds from time to time. A few neighbors would see people in the window with 1800’s cloths on. One younger child that was visiting the carriage house also talked about the child they were playing with. My mom said that there was a 3rd floor sky light would always open even though it would be locked shut. While she was living there the owner was Carl Weschcke who practiced witchcraft and did séances.
The late Carl Weschke was a well-liked local character who founded one of the best known paranormal publishing houses in the country, Llewelyn Publishing! He moved in there because of its haunted reputation! With his flair for the dramatic, I’m sure he would have been willing to stage a few “seances” for the publicity–that’s just good business (never heard about any “witchcraft” business, though)! The ghostly activity definitely preceded his residency, for sure!
