Captain Frank McHarry’s Tomb is located on a bluff overlooking the Ohio River. The gravesite of the steamboat captain is said to be visited by a ghostly light or mist. Legend has it that the tomb was built on this spot so he could watch over his former stomping grounds. Reports say the vault is actually empty, though, as the body was moved to Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville.

I first visited this site in the mid 1970’s. The tomb was built for my ggg grandfather, Alexander McHarry, who was born in 1771 near Greayabbey, County Down, Northern Ireland. He died in 1850. I assume that his wife, Margaret McWhinnie McHarry, was also entombed there, but have never found graves for them elsewhere. I found no evidence of bones there then or since. From what I’ve read, vandals broke into the tomb many years ago and it was in bad shape in the 1970’s.
