Woodland Cemetery has a sad story. Young Johnny Morehouse froze to death when he fell into the Miami & Erie Canal, although his dog tried hard to pull him out. After Johnny died, the dog wouldn’t move from the gravesite, and eventually died. A statue was made of the dog, to sit alongside Johnny on the grave. Moved by the story, folks come from all around to leave toys at the grave. But this isn’t the sad part. In 2008, vandals sawed the head off the dog statue, and now it stands headless. Nevertheless, Johnny’s and his dog’s spirits are said to linger here, and visitors have heard barking and playing. The ghost of a blonde girl in jeans and white tennis shoes also appears here, sitting on a stone. She sometimes talks to visitors who think she’s a living person. Locals can tell you several other ghost stories about this cemetery.

  1. Oh my. I love this cemetery and have visited often, which has also led to several spooky instances. My first experience at the cemetery was when I was enjoying lunch with my mother and grandmother. While driving around, we kept passing a big and old yellow taxi cab that had black and white checker designs. Very old school, something you would see in a movie. We passed it over and over again, just driving along very surreal like.
On this same day we noticed a man walking around which isn’t unusual. This is a very visited cemetery, and there are often picnics or joggers just because it’s a beautiful place to be. However, it also sprawls with hill and trees over what would be several city blocks. Without a car it would take hours to cover the ground we did that day on foot, however no matter what edge of the cemetery we were at, there was the walker. He wasn’t following our vehicle and there is no way anyone could have matched our pace on foot, he would have had to climb steep hills and confusing road ways. I still can’t fathom how we saw him in every area we went, on top of the taxi that I’ve never seen anything like in my life. I’ve never seen it again either, despite the fact that I’ve visited this place dozens of times and I lived in downtown Dayton for quite a while. On another occasion, there were a flock of geese far away from the scenic pond on the property. As in, a very very large flock of geese just sitting in the grass and not moving from a very small area. The next day I went back to this spot that they were in and it must have been a family plot because every tombstone bore the last name “GOOSE.” This last one is more funny and coincidental than anything, but I suppose it could hold some mystical value.
