Squire’s Castle is actually a 3-story stone caretaker’s cottage for a never-built mansion, and legend has it that it’s home to an unhappy female ghost. Feargus B. Squire planned to built a mansion as well, but until then, his family took up residence in the cottage. His wife hated the country and wasn’t happy about his plans. She developed insomnia and tended to roam the cottage with a little red lantern. An unfortunate accident one night in Mr. Squire’s trophy room left Mrs. Squire dead. Perhaps frightened by the animal heads on the walls, she began screaming, and tripped and broke her neck in her haste to get away. The distraught Mr. Squire never built his mansion. Mrs. Squire’s apparition and the red light from her lantern have been seen through the windows, and her screams ring out at night.
Actual historic records say Mrs. Squire died of a stroke many years after the house was sold.
