The Nell Cropsey House is a private home that is known for its namesake ghost, the beautiful Nell Cropsey. She moved here with her parents in 1898. She became engaged to the sheriff’s son Jim Wilcox, but in 1901, she vanished from the house. Jim was arrested on suspicion of murder; Nell’s body was found beaten to death in the Pasqotank River. Jim was convicted of murder and received a sentence of 30 years, but was pardoned in 1918. In 1932, Jim made a deal with a newspaper editor to write a book about Nell’s case, but after their first meeting, Jim shot himself in the head. Shortly thereafter, the editor was killed in a car accident. The details of the case remain unknown, and Nell’s ghost has been seen roaming the halls of her home.

They refuse to allow ghost hunts here. I tried. However, it is part of the local ghost walk tour, held seasonally.
Do you do hunts?
My brother and his ex-wife, and children owned and lived in this house for nearly 15yrs. I have personal stayed there numerous times. Never experienced any unusual activity. I believe it’s just a ploy by city and towns folk to generate tourism. Everything else is BS!!!
I am moving to Elizabeth City in a few months. We visited earlier to see the area. It is very old in some areas. I personally visited a home that was haunted. Not this house. I can definitely see how some homes/ areas could be haunted. Just my opinion.
