The Old Dutch Parsonage was built in 1751 and was moved around 1913 to its present location, next door to the 1775 Wallace House. The Parsonage is said to be extremely haunted, with screams, banging, and objects being moved around at night. The Wallace House also is said to have a ghost, albeit a friendly one, known to tug clothing or tap the shoulders of guests and guides during tours. George Washington and his officers allegedly stayed here during the Revolutionary War.

I lived across the street from the Wallace House as a kid. We would sit on our front porch at night and watch lights go up and down the stairs. I would play with the caretakers daughter and when they would open in the morning it would look like someone had ransacked the place overnight. There was a post card carousel and I saw it get spun very fast and the postcards flew out of it.
There seems to be no foundation for the story about the Wallace House being haunted. A discussion with the former caretaker’s daughter, whom I also knew, indicates a little youthful fun and exaggeration from those long-gone days (there hasn’t been an employee called a “caretaker’ there in over 30 years). The nearby Old Dutch Parsonage was a different story, however, until 1987, when a visiting clergyman sensed an evil presence and did a spiritual cleansing of the house. The house has been quiet and has had a much friendlier feel to it since then. Note that 6 “ghosthunters” have been arrested there in the last seven years. They are great places to visit, though, with a lot of interesting history. The staff there really knows their stuff.
Wallace House / Dutch Parsonage entrance
The house was once closer to the road but was moved back for the railroad…
Wallace House rear
Nice pictures of the Wallace House! However, it was never moved . The nearby Dutch Parsonage was moved in 1913.
