Washington Irving's Sunnyside

You are here Home  > Historical Buildings >  Washington Irving's Sunnyside

Washington Irving’s Sunnyside, historic home of the famed writer of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle,” is said to be haunted by Irving himself as well as his nieces, who used to take care of the home. Irving’s ghost has a reputation for pinching women, and his spectral nieces tidy up after the museum is closed for the night.

  1. Visited Sunnyside with my husband the last week of June 2019. Found it funny that initially when the tour began in the house, the door was locked behind us. I found that a little odd and one of the guests even asked why, the guide assured it was just to make sure that only one group was in the house at a time. Disregarded that and went through the whole house its many rooms and narrow hallways and stairs. Towards the end I was hearing another female voice as if another tour group had started their tour. One member asked if another group had begun their tour of the house. The guide laughed a bit nervously and said no. We all just finished the tour and as we walked back up to the house, my husband and I peered around at the front door in which we entered and no other group was there. Could be an explanation but I couldn’t help that eerie feeling.

  2. After the tour I went outside to take pictures of the windows the one on the right I saw something in picture on my phone I saw Washington Irving his face in the window.
