“Local legend says those who sit in the statue’s lap are cursed and will die.”
I don’t know about the cursed part, but I guarantee that statue is batting a thousand if anyone who sits in it’s lap dies. I might even go so far as to say that anyone who doesn’t sit in it’s lap is doomed to the same fate.
LOL, well IIRC while growing up there, the “legend” was that if you sat on her lap at midnight, you could feel her holding you down…. The Cemetery is a pretty neat place to explore, there is a stairway in the woods made of carved out granite and leading nowhere, and a child’s headstone of an Angel with arms crossed where people leave little gifts/ flowers. Hubbard (Black Agnes) was a prominent figure in Montpelier’s history, and owned the Cemetery (you can see his name on the large Entrance to the land). Spooky at night!!
In about 2002 I visited the Cemetery to see Black Agnes and heard a hollow thumping sound while I was standing near the marker – it sounded like it was coming from inside the monument. It was in the late summer, at twilight, and there was nobody else in the vicinity. I did take a photo but nothing unusual turned up on it. I haven’t been back since though!
