Historic Woodlawn was originally built in 1805 for Martha Washington’s granddaughter Nelly Parke Custis and her husband Major Lawrence Lewis. Now a museum, the place is rumored to be haunted by some of its many generations of former residents.

About twenty years ago my husband, daughter & I visited Woodlawn Plantation. It was sometime in November (I wanted to purchase a few items from the gift shop for Christmas presents) & quite cold with some snow on the ground. As we approached the building on the walkway in front of the house, I caught the very strong scent of spring flowers. I commented about it to my husband who smelled nothing, then I noticed my two-year-old daughter in her stroller sniffing the air. It was a beautiful scent & I smelled it again as we left. Several years later, my daughter & I returned in the summer & didn’t smell the flowery scent. I even took a short video of my daughter on the walkway with nothing unusual to report!
