Millionaire businessman George C. Boldt, proprietor of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City, built the castle for his wife around 1900 for $2.5 million. It was to be a Valentine’s Day gift to his wife on 1905. But in January 1904, Louise Boldt suddenly died. Heartbroken, Boldt stopped the construction and never went there again. The castle is thought to be haunted by George and Louise Boldt, as witnesses have heard footsteps in corridors and seen a light in the upper windows.
