A ghostly baby and mother are said to haunt the cemetery. Local legend has it that if you drop a rock into the well in the center of the cemetery at night, you will hear the baby crying. The baby’s mother has been seen running through the cemetery. According to the local tales, long ago the woman sat the baby on the edge of the old well as she was drawing water, and the baby fell in and drowned.

This legend of this cemetery may carry on, but the well is not. The well is now filled in and is no longer there.
i live in dequeen
so were do u drop the rock
The well has been cemented over in the mid-late 1990;s. You will find the baby’s grave accross from the well but the mothers grave is not next to her baby’s. You might be able to find her grave in the weeds and vines 10-15 free away from the baby’s grave.
My wife and I were there today and we couldn’t find where the well used to be. We went through the cemetery several times. Also, does anyone know the name of the mother or her baby?
The well is no longer there and it wasn’t in the center of the cemetery it was back where the old avon church used to stand
On the map, to the left there is a junction where the 3 roads meet. The building and well was on the north side of the junction. I remember the the building was used as a community building in the 70’s. The well was closer to the road. All the older-elderly adults would insist that no children were to go near the well. I remember the story a little differently. The mother had killed the baby, then threw it in the well.
Visited this cemetery today , didn’t see a well or mother or baby and didn’t see a gravesite or a place where the well was…so this legend is a bust!
It was stated the well is covered up. I’m from the area and I’ve heard the story all my life and remember when the well was covered up.
I live in DeQueen the church was torn down and well covered up after a cult was found holding meetings there a long time ago the legend I heard was the the baby fell in the well and the woman grieved herself to death and yes the well was in the forks of the road in front of the church I remember it well
Ever heard of a ghost light on the tracks at the Avon Rd. RR crossing? I grew up in DeQueen and did. Years ago, myself and two friends walked way down the tracks late one very dark, cold night to look for it. 15 minutes later and freezing, we gave up. Walking back to the car, we began hearing bipedal footsteps of someone or some”thing” following us no more than 25 or 30 feet behind and to our right at the edge of the woods, matching our movement. It walked when we walked and stopped when we stopped. It sounded exactly like a person walking in the leaves but could not have been as it was simply too dark to see. Not being able to see what was following us was more strange than seeing any light and still bothers me to this day.
I want to say Bigfoot, but there were multiple releases of ostrich and emus following the failure of many people’s attempts to farm them and make money doing so several years ago. People simply released them – poor birds. My husband experienced something similar to what you are describing, but he managed to see the large, bipedal (but flightless) bird run past. Before seeing it, he would have definitely said Sasquatch.
wtm?
