In July of 1992, I had stayed in the upstairs room left of the stairs in the Keeper’s Quarters, which is the house next to the lighthouse because the Coast Guard cutter I was assigned to wasn’t going to be in port for another week. During that week, late at night I would here someone walking in the hall just outside the door by the stairs. At times it would sound like the walking was in the room just in front of me. It was hard to concentrate on where the walking was at times because the damn fog horn from the lighthouse would go off outside when we had low visibility at night, so I could only listen without distractions for a minute or two at a time. At one point I got up and opened the door to the hall but saw no one. So I shut the door and no sooner than I sat down on the bed I could hear the footsteps right outside the door again. For the rest of the night I kept the light on in my room and turned on music from the clock radio that I had and just laid there until I eventually fell asleep. In the morning I told the a couple of guys at the station what happened. They said they heard rumors of things like that happening before. This would happen off and on during the rest of the week until my ship finally arrived and I was out of there. Flash forwards 15 years or so, I start seeing paranormal investigations at Portsmouth lighthouse and Fort Constitution on youtube and Ghost Hunters that where based on claims that were very similar to the experiences I had, only many years later. I feel that if people who I never met are having the same experiences that I had in the keeper’s quarter’s over a decade later, it validates my experience there in 1992. For years it was just a weird thing that I would think about from time to time, but once I heard that other people would hear the walking in that building, I was like,” Dude, I freaking knew it! That’s the same thing I heard.”
