Smoker Park

You are here Home  > Miscellaneous >  Smoker Park

Smoker Park is a small section of land on the south side of the New River, across the water from the Stranahan House (also haunted). The park has been a hotbed of contention between locals and potential developers – at one time it was very nearly destroyed to make room for condominiums, but local protests help to secure it as a permanent public space.

It is said that in the area immediately around an enormous old tree in the park, people have claimed they were poked and prodded by unseen hands in the darkness. Drumming sounds have also been heard, and ghost hunters seem to find peculiar orbs in their photographs.

  1. Im currently working on the constuction site on the west side of the park while working underneth the pool I have been scratched, things been thrown, my extension cord been pulled twice and a coworker said he seen some one standing behind him while working

  2. I visited this site in the late 1990s. I found a small group of North American Indians, of diverse tribes, camped out there. They were protesting the development of the ‘park’. I was informed that it was an ancient Indian burial ground. The mound could still be seen, near the west end of the property across from the jailhouse. My acquaintance was of a Canadian tribe and he had outlined a Thunderbird shape on a board (possibly indicating the sacredness of the original intentions of the tribe). The head of the shape was pointing east and looking south, the usual way of directing the dearly departed to their resting place in the sky (at least by my tribe’s understanding). I mentioned to him that the original Thunderbird had finished its task and had died; that the head was missing, in the area of an existing building in the east area, apartments I think. He asked what else I saw. I explained that a new and younger Thunderbird had arisen and it was headed north and looking east. I was hoping to discuss the purpose of this new one, possibly protection of some kind, with the visiting Medicine Woman, but she was engulfed in ceremonial prayers at the time and I had to leave. Oddly enough, each Thunderbird shared the same ‘Heart’, a large, older tree in the center of the area. Stories abounded at that time regarding people who had been involved in developing that ‘park’ for profit and each had suffered a death of some kind. Take care, my friend. Turq’oya

There is a lovely mature grove of oak trees with one being the bigger or more central figure. I found this grove to be very quiet and peaceful, even though there was a lot of activity on the New River at that time.
