This is an odd one from “Ghost Stories of Old New Orleans,” a 1946 classic by Jeanne deLavigne. A crotchety old man named Abner White lived in this neighborhood, and he constantly terrorized the local children – in one case he even physically attacked a young girl named Ollie Voss, shaking her violently after a perceived affront. When Abner finally died, the entire neighborhood rejoiced, but it seemed he wasn’t quite finished with his nasty tricks. Shortly after his death, Ollie Voss was burned to death in her home during a freak incident – a flaming brick shot out of her fireplace, apparently all on its own, and ignited her nightdress. As she was fighting the flames she screamed Abner White’s name, swearing she could see his face in the fireplace.
As the story goes, Ollie’s little body was buried shortly thereafter – for some reason, right next to the tomb of Abner White. It seemed neither of them were happy with the arrangement. For about a week in 1890, somewhere over the 200 block of Cherokee Street where they once lived, it was said that the spirits of Ollie and Abner viciously fought each other night and day. No one could see them, but bricks and refuse were constantly being hurled from the sky onto unsuspecting bystanders along the block. This phenomenon continued day after day until finally Ollie’s remains were removed from the tomb and placed elsewhere, at which point the freakish rain of bricks finally ceased.
