The Hawaiian name means “City of Refuge,” and this park was the site of the largest Huna temple. Here, those who broke the rules of the religion could work off their sins instead of being put to death for them. At the temple, there is also a heiau, a stone structure that housed the bones of leaders. Sometimes robbers would try to steal the mana, or life force, from these gravesites, and many came to be known as haunted.
