Old Stone House

You are here Home  > Historical Buildings >  Old Stone House

The 18th-century home is reported to be one of the oldest buildings in D.C. It’s believed to be home to at least four spirits, who knock things off shelves and perform other mischievous tricks. One spirit is said to be an “unfriendly male” who has scared many a visitor.

  2. This is my most favorite place in all of D.C. As a native Washingtonian, I have heard all the ghost stories in DC, but the one I actually experianced was this place. There had been a blizzard in DC in 1996, it was bad because pretty much most of the city had shut down, but in the quiet days before we got hit with another storm front, my ex-fiance and I stopped in sinc eit was the one place open. As I said this is my favorite place, so I wanted to see how pretty the garden looked in deep snow. A Park Ranger was sitting nice and cozy by the fire in the kitchen and none of the hidden electrical lights were on. It felt like I was literally sucked back into the 18th century. We spoke with the ranger about the history and looked around the two floors that were open to the public (now there are 3) I loved how cozy it was but I knew we weren’t alone as we looked into the rooms. I asked the ranger before we left if he ever felt frightened being all alone there. He said he didn’t and he wasn’t alone. I knew what he meant, I had felt it many times I had come in. But after he said that, we heard very loudly and distinctly the sound of the latch handle being used upstairs, like a door was being opened. He looked at me, and I said no, you aren’t. There was no one else in the house except us three. The third floor was locked up with a modern lock on its door. No latches. We were all standing in the stone kitchen with the fire. I still visit it to this day, but the young workers refuse to be alone there. They always have two people, maybe three for tiurist season.
