Although the museum denies the existence of a ghost here, rumor has it that it is haunted by the spirit of former Speaker of the House John Wilson. His ghost has been seen here by many, wearing a period frock-coat. Others have reported cold spots or the feeling of a cold hand on their shoulder. Some say the ghost is not Wilson but another politician, Joseph Brooks.

A correction to your narrative: In 1837 John Wilson killed Joseph Anthony (not Brooks) on the floor of the Statehouse when Wilson stabbed Anthony with his bowie knife. Wilson was tried in Saline County and acquitted. I don’t know where Anthony is buried. I haven’t located his grave at Mt. Holly nor in any of the cemeteries of his home county, Randolph County. Joseph Brooks was involved heavily with Little Rock and the Old State House. Look up the Brooks-Baxter War.
I went to the Old Statehouse on a school field trip as a child. There was a room upstairs – looking at the floorplan of the 2nd floor-I believe it was the original attorney general’s room. In this room they had period clothes in old trunks that were altered and cut up the back so that kids could try them on. I stayed there longer than my classmates and suddenly felt like someone was in the room watching me. It scared the crap out of me and I ran to catch up with my group in the lecture hall.
